SNOHOMISH, WASHINGTON — A serious head-on collision involving two vehicles shut down both directions of State Route 9 near Snohomish on Saturday evening, leaving two drivers seriously injured and prompting a major emergency response from local fire crews and law enforcement agencies.
According to Snohomish County Fire District officials, the high-speed crash occurred around 7:24 p.m. near the intersection of SR 9, Bonneville Avenue, and 16th Street. Emergency responders were dispatched immediately after reports of a severe two-vehicle collision involving extensive damage and trapped occupants.
Fire officials stated that crews arrived at the scene within approximately three minutes and discovered both vehicles with catastrophic front-end damage. Authorities confirmed that both drivers were trapped inside their vehicles due to the force of the impact.
Firefighters quickly began rescue operations, using specialized extraction equipment, including the jaws of life, to free one of the trapped drivers from the wreckage. Officials said the extraction process took approximately 17 minutes as emergency crews worked carefully to remove the victim while minimizing further injury.
Both drivers sustained serious injuries in the crash, according to officials. One of the individuals reportedly suffered life-threatening injuries. After being stabilized at the scene, both victims were transported to Providence Medical Center in Everett for emergency medical treatment.
The violent collision forced the closure of State Route 9 in both directions as firefighters, paramedics, and law enforcement officers worked at the scene. Traffic quickly backed up in the surrounding area while authorities redirected motorists away from the highway closure.
The Washington State Patrol has taken over the investigation into the cause of the crash. Officials remained at the scene for several hours gathering evidence, documenting vehicle positions, and reconstructing the events leading up to the collision.
According to Snohomish County officials, alcohol is suspected to have been a contributing factor in the crash, though investigators have not yet released additional details regarding which driver may have been impaired or whether charges could eventually be filed.
The incident has once again highlighted the devastating consequences that high-speed and potentially impaired-driving crashes can have on individuals, families, and communities. Local residents expressed concern and sadness after learning of the serious injuries suffered in the collision, especially given the severity of the damage described by first responders.
Witnesses in the area reported seeing a large emergency response presence along SR 9 as flashing lights illuminated the roadway and rescue crews worked urgently to save the trapped victims. Some drivers described lengthy traffic delays while officials conducted the investigation and cleared the damaged vehicles from the highway.
State Route 9 remained closed for an extended period Saturday night as investigators continued processing the crash scene. Authorities urged motorists to avoid the area and seek alternate travel routes while emergency operations remained active.
The crash serves as another tragic reminder of the importance of roadway safety and the dangers associated with speeding and impaired driving. Law enforcement officials continue encouraging drivers to make responsible choices behind the wheel and remain alert while traveling on busy highways.
As the investigation continues, authorities are expected to release additional information regarding the condition of the victims and the circumstances surrounding the collision once confirmed.
For now, the Snohomish community remains focused on the recovery of the injured drivers and grateful for the rapid response efforts of firefighters, paramedics, and law enforcement personnel who worked under intense conditions to provide lifesaving assistance at the scene.
